Position Overview
Odyssey Contracting is seeking a detail-driven Construction Accountant to manage day-to-day accounting operations while protecting job profitability, cash flow, and financial accuracy. This role is responsible for job costing, AR/AP oversight, financial reporting, and system integrity, working closely with Leadership, Project Management, and Operations.
This is not a passive bookkeeping role. The Accountant at Odyssey is an active financial operator who understands construction workflows and flags issues before they become problems.
Core Responsibilities
Job Costing & Financial Control
- Maintain accurate job cost tracking by project.
- Ensure costs are coded correctly to jobs, phases, and cost categories.
- Monitor job margins and flag variances or erosion.
- Reconcile labor, materials, and subcontractor costs to jobs.
- Support WIP (Work in Progress) tracking as required.
Accounts Receivable (AR) Management
- Generate and track customer invoices per contract milestones.
- Monitor AR aging and support collections efforts.
- Coordinate with Project Managers on billing approvals and timing.
- Track retainage and ensure proper release.
- Reduce outstanding AR and protect company cash flow.
Accounts Payable (AP) & Vendor Management
- Process vendor and subcontractor invoices accurately and timely.
- Verify invoices against scopes, approvals, and job progress.
- Track lien waivers, COIs, and required documentation.
- Maintain clean vendor records and payment schedules.
- Coordinate with Operations on payment timing and approvals.
Payroll & Labor Cost Oversight
- Support payroll processing and labor cost allocation.
- Ensure labor is coded correctly by job and cost type.
- Track labor burden and overhead allocations.
- Assist with payroll audits and compliance.
- Support leadership with labor cost analysis.
Financial Reporting & Reconciliation
- Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly financial statements for leadership review.
- Support budget vs. actual reporting.
- Assist with cash flow forecasting.
- Maintain accurate balance sheet accounts.
Systems & Process Management
- Maintain accounting accuracy in QuickBooks or equivalent system.
- Coordinate accounting data with CRM and project management systems.
- Enforce standardized chart of accounts and coding rules.
- Assist in developing and maintaining financial SOPs.
- Support audits, CPA requests, and year-end close.
Internal Collaboration
- Work closely with Project Managers on cost and billing accuracy.
- Support leadership with financial insights and reporting.
- Assist Sales with deposit tracking and contract setup.
- Participate in weekly or monthly financial review meetings.
- Act as a financial backstop for Operations decisions.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of accounting experience (construction preferred).
- Strong understanding of job costing and construction accounting.
- Experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting software.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to communicate financial issues clearly to non-accountants.
Preferred Qualifications
- Construction industry experience (remodeling, GC, or specialty trades).
- Experience with accrual accounting and WIP reporting.
- Familiarity with lien waivers, retainage, and progress billing.
- Experience supporting AR cleanup and cash flow improvement.
- Prior experience working closely with operations teams.
