It’s every homeowner’s worst nightmare. In the middle of a violent storm you hear a huge crash and realize that a tree branch has came down on your roof. That kind of damage can leave you feeling vulnerable and unsure of what the next steps need to be. We want to emphasize that time is of the essence, especially when it comes to filing an insurance claim and getting the repairs. After you give us a call, we will promptly schedule our trusted tree removal contractor to your home, as well as one of our in-house restorations specialists to begin assisting you with the repairs process.

Why a Tree Might Fall During a Storm

  • Tornadoes: Tornadoes can often strike without warning, taking down trees and sending them crashing directly into your home.
  • Thunderstorms: Even a mild thunderstorm can sometimes cause a tree to blow over and fall onto your roof.
  • High winds: High winds can easily knock over the entire tree or send branches through the air.
  • Hurricanes: Any strength of hurricane can have disastrous side effects, including tree damage to buildings.
  • Tree disease: A diseased tree is weakened, which makes it more susceptible to falling over.
  • Saturated Soil: Heavy rains for an extended period saturate the soil around the roots. Once this happens, even average winds can blow down a tree.

Tree Damage Repairs Process

After the tree has been removed by our trusted tree removers, or a company that you’ve hired on your own, we can begin the tree damage repairs process. All repairs generally follow the same process, with some exceptions and changes depending on the trade or upgrades. We always start with an inspection, at no-cost to you. Our tree damage repairs expert will locate and asses the damages. Often times when a tree hits a home, it does more damage to the home than what meets the untrained eye. Our professionals are highly skilled in recognizing the start of a leak, rotting wood, and other problems that your insurance adjuster might not be trained to identify.

Once the tree damage has been identified and documented, we will recommend filing a claim with your insurance provider. Our expert field representative will assist you in filing the claim to ensure the right information is relayed. After given authorization, we will handle the rest of the claims process, and make sure that you are not being shorthanded.

As soon as the insurance claim process is settled, our tree damage repairs specialist will begin scheduling the repairs and will help you to match or upgrade your material type or color.

How Long Do The Repairs Take?

Giving an exact time isn’t easy due to the many variables. Each claim is unique and each carrier has different guidelines on how they operate and what they approve. The average tree damage claim takes 3-4 months from start to finish of the tree damage claims process. The work doesn’t actually take this long, unless the damage is very extensive.

The reason the claim takes this long is because your insurance company is a for profit business, beyond that there are many contractors who bill the insurance company for work that is not actually done. As a result, the carriers require tree damage contractors to go to great lengths to prove the necessary repairs. At Odyssey Contracting, we’ve adopted a policy where we contact a structural engineer immediately so that we can have irrefutable evidence of the damages and at least begin the temporary repairs.

Further delaying the repairs to your home is that you have no control over who the adjuster is that creates your preliminary estimate. Many of the adjusters in the field today have little to no hands on construction experience, instead new adjusters are taught guidelines only and not proper repairs. Most initial estimates that we receive from the carrier are more than 50% below what the final total will be. Fortunately, Odyssey has a highly experienced licensed adjuster on staff. Meaning we are able to negotiate your claim in a way that many other contractors cannot.

When filing your claim, understand going in that it may be a long and tedious process. Generally speaking the longer you are willing to wait for your contractor to supplement and negotiate the claim, the better results you will have. Delaying is a primary tactic of all insurance carriers because they know most customers will give up and just accept what they’ve offered.

Does Insurance Cover Tree Damage Repairs?

Your insurance policy does cover damages done to your home by mother nature. But your time to file a claim is limited. Often times leaks and damages aren’t obvious and go unnoticed for months or even years! If you’ve exceeded the timeframe to file a claim, the insurance company will deny the claim and leave YOU responsible for covering the full bill! That is why we also highly recommend that you get routine home inspections to check for damages that you might not be seeing.

If a tree or branches has hit your home, we advise that you have one of our restoration experts meet you at your home to conduct a through inspection, and give you guidance on where to go from there. Should we determine you have damage and your insurance company denies your claim, we’ll meet with you and your adjuster to demonstrate why your tree damage repairs should be fully covered by your insurance policy.
