The paint on a home is an item that is often overlooked, but crucial to the longevity of your exterior wood surfaces. Keeping a fresh coat of paint on wood-fascia, columns, stairs and any other exterior-wood surface, can increase their lifespan by decades!
Unfortunately, most homeowners wait until they already have wood-rot on their home before deciding to paint. This only increases their paint estimate because they now must also replace wood surfaces before painting.
How often should I paint my home?
It's a good rule-of-thumb to paint your home every 5-7 years. Some external factors can extend or shorten this timeline, the main factor being sunlight. Even after a fresh coat of paint, the sun immediately begins to degrade, fade and breakdown the paint on your home. Trees leaning against your home will allow water to constantly touch your siding, which degrades the paint and rots the wood. Anther problem is poor, or non-existent, guttering. Gutters that overflow will rot and stain siding and fascia.
Even though we say 5-7 years, this is just a suggestion. Some fascia, front doors and other areas may need to be painted every 1 or 2 years. It just depends on your homes conditions.
The best way to prevent sun damage to your home is to have trees that block out some of the sun's rays. For most of us, this is not a fast or easy solution, trees take years to grow. All you can do is keep an eye out for chipping paint, once you see it, you know it's time for another coat of paint in that area.
Keeping trees off of your home is equally important, just keep them trimmed down about one-foot away from your home. Keeping your gutters cleaned out and flowing properly will help to reduce the chances of wood rot to your home. If your gutters are overflowing and you can't immediately fix the problem, put a fresh coat of paint where the water is running. This will give you a barrier between the water and the wood.
Is the expensive paint worth it?
It is also worth the extra money to buy quality paint products, I can't stress this enough! High quality paint can get an extra 2 or 3 years out of each paint job. Over time, this adds up to big money!
We use Sherwin Williams brand paints, only! This is a large corporation that has dedicated itself to supplying only top quality products. They also pour a lot of money into research and innovation so that they can stay ahead of the industry. For these reasons, and after years of using their paints, we believe in their products.
